Albion’s recruitment has been focussed on brining in young promising players that will hopefully develop during their time at the club and appreciate in value. Some of these have been on the cheap for players that are undervalued; Diakite, Styles and Heggem are examples.
However, the new ownership has also shown that the club is willing to spend money on the right player, but long contracts are going to be required to spread the fee over a longer period to ease PSR restrictions, and also to protect Albion’s investment. Issac Price is the second example of that this season.
The 21 year-old Northern Ireland international has joined the Albion for a reported £2.5m on a 4.5 year contract. Price came through the Everton academy and moved to Belgium after he let his contract run down at the Toffees. Despite being only 21, Price has already made 18 international appearances and scored six goals from central midfield.
Goal-scoring has come easier in international colours than club for Price - he only scored once for Standard Liege in his 50 appearances. It’s not for a lack of trying though, Price has taken two shots per 90 this season, more than any of Albion’s regular central midfielders. Price’s willingness to get shots off is the promising thing, if he can keep that up then he will score goals, as he has for Northern Ireland.
